The reading program at Cardinal Pacelli School is comprised of many elements, all of which are designed to foster the love of reading. Students learn reading skills with the use of texts and trade books, while maintaining an emphasis on phonics and sight words. Independent reading, reading aloud, and pleasure reading are vital components of our program. In the middle and junior high grades, vocabulary and reading comprehension are continually stressed as we teach the appreciation of good literature. This includes short stories, plays, poetry, mythology and novels. Our Accelerated Reading Program enables students to advance their reading abilities with confidence – students read at their own level and continue to advance when testing confirms material comprehension.
The writing process is learned early and applied throughout our students’ years at Cardinal Pacelli. At all levels, grammar and composition skills are taught and reinforced through the reading program. These efforts are enhanced with our participation in the Power of the Pen, Ohio’s award-winning program devoted to excellence in creative writing. The Power of the Pen allows all of our junior high students to benefit from in-class instructional aides, while enabling a team of young writers to participate in interscholastic competitions.
